The Week that Was

Helen & Sue

Helen and Sue - Hard at It

A great night was had by all who attended DIK in West Footscray.

Bill& Laurie

Bill and Laurie - Swap Notes

Our “DIK working bee” was attended by Paul and his wife Pauline, Sue (on her birthday – HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUE!), Gerard, myself and the late Ricardo (late arrival that is!)

We arrived around 6:15 and assisted in picking, folding then packing new shorts into boxes.  We finished around 8pm after packing over 50 boxes (approx 1500 pairs of shorts) Laurie (Rotarian) and Helen (non-Rotary Volunteer) were impressed with the number of pallets emptied and then re-packed ready for shipping – packing speed 3.5 pairs per minute  – Good Work Team!!

At the completion of our manual labour, we sat and enjoyed a sumptuous meal.  Without great coordination, every one contributed to our meal which consisted of Roast Beef & Lamb, Roast Pumpkin, Carrot and Jacket Potato’s, Gravy, Bread, Pasta Salad,  very fine White & Red wines followed by a selection of Carrot Cake & Bavarian Cheese Cake and Coffee.  We were joined by Helen and Laurie for dinner and even though Bill Dagg had already eaten and declined to join us,  the smell of the roast meats and pumpkin was too much for him to resist.  Two plates of food later……..every one was satisfied.

It was my first visit to DIK,  it is a large warehouse complex,  full of pallets of clothes,

hospital equipment, etc. While containers are regularly dispatched,  future funding is still required to get the “Donations in Kind” to those who need the goods so urgently.

It was a very satisfying evening, shared with friends and we did good!

Courtesy of Ricardo we bring you an advance screening of the East Timor Balibo project documentary. This has been put together from recent footage, archives and the movie of the same name. Interesting viewing about 10 minutes. Ricardo will present this at International house next Sunday at the RAWCS forum from 0900 to 1200. A little slow loading but worth the wait.

  • Got a project
  • Want to Promote It
  • Needs some Tips
  • Want to Support International service

Here’s what you do

Attend and participate in the D9800 RAWCS Committee International service Seminar

and support Ricardo the Club presentation

Bob Glinderman District RAWCS Chair writes with all the details below:

RAWCS LogoInternational Service Seminar
SHARING EXPERIENCES IN INTERNATIONAL SERVICE

The aim, in fact primary purpose, of the D9800 RAWCS Committee is to encourage
and support District 9800 Clubs in their International Service endeavours. In pursuit
of our purpose, we will be conducting a seminar with the aim of providing an
opportunity for the Clubs of our District to share their knowledge of International
Service.

The seminar will be held at International House, 241 Royal Parade, Parkville, on the
11h July with registration commencing at 9:00 am and the seminar being completed
by 12:30 pm.

The seminar will include a presentation by the D9800 RAWCS committee on
opportunities for International Service and the assistance that is available. This
presentation will be followed by participants being provided with the opportunity to
learn of the International Service projects of other Clubs in our District. It is expected
that this will assist in providing the inspiration and knowledge that is so essential to
the development and implementation of successful International Service projects.
It is requested that your members be encouraged to attend this seminar. Members that
do attend will receive the benefit of discussing the practical aspects of mounting
worthwhile International Service projects with Rotarians who have “been there and
done that”. Such discussions are known to not only allay fears and reservations but
also to generate the enthusiasm that is so essential to the success of this work.
The invitation to the seminar is extended to all of your club members but attendance
by you and members with a particular or potential interest in International Service
would benefit most.

We look forward to your personal participation in the seminar and to that of the
members of your Rotary Club.

Yours in Rotary
Bob Glindemann

Geri Charles

2009-2010 President Geri Charles

Reflections

I have always considered it an honour and a privilege to be president of this club for the past year and firstly I must acknowledge the friendship, support, advice and motivation you have all given me.

Yes, we have matured to be a small in numbers club, and in my  reflections, part of me believes this to be an extremely negative outcome however I can also view it as a consolidating time where the members have each ‘pulled up their socks’ and contributed their best as time and circumstances allowed. I have been conscious of of this and I hope I haven’t put too much pressure on anyone. I believe we do have a firm foundation to grow on and while the seed for RCPM was planted 3 years ago it has been sprouting and now with all our support will grow and flourish. My personal mission for the coming year is to firmly embed into the Port Melbourne community there is a Rotary Club here and invite locals to join us.

What have we been up to?

Fellowship: Working bees at DIK, Christmas in July dinner where members brought along gifts that were distributed via St Vincents de Paul shop, “girls nights out” to theatre, Interclub visits and a Comic Club outing.

Community Service: Government House Open day, Christmas luncheon at St. Joseph’s Mission, WeetBix for Kids Fun Run, Second Bite on a weekly basis, Awareness BBQ in Port Melbourne in conjunction with the Bendigo Community Bank, Life Saving Victoria Training Days catering.

Vocation/New Generations: Sponsored a student to Rotary Youth Leadership assembly(RYLA) in December, District Youth Exchange student as guest speaker, International Ambassadorial Scholarship holders as guest speakers.

International Service: Sponsored 2 projects in East Timor which have been overseen by Ricardo, $1000.00 contribution to Polio Plus , each member becoming an Every Year Centurion.

During the year there were a number of highlights, celebrations and exciting events however for me the most rewarding and fulfilling times were at our Monday evening meetings, what a diverse, interesting bunch we are at RCPM!! where Grant entertained and mentally challenged ,(especially me!!) us with his Sergeants sessions and the conversations and discussions were all around Rotary- what we, as part of this wonderful international organisation, using our gifts and vocations could do to make our world a better place for all.

I wish Grant all the best for the coming year and offer him my full support as I am confident he can make that seed grow.

I would like now to present the award of Club Person of the Year to Ricardo.

Geri Charles
