• Balibo CLC – Soft opening of renovated Cafeteria

Another Balibo story, and yes, it could get boring when presented with so much happening there over the past 12 months.

Late in 2016, we had the Dental Clinic construction and opening, along with the new Community Kitchen, the Resident Volunteers Apartment and 2 shipments of educational & health materials. That was busy enough, but with the arrival of Builder Ross and Teacher Virginia McMillan in early February, things have accelerated even more! The Balibo 5 Kindergarten has been extended, the Conference Room is mid-way through construction, the Mechanics Training Shop is finished and the English Class Room has a new roof. There are huge new water tanks at the CLC and the Kindy.

But the BIG news from the CLC Management Team, Michele Ranking, Marino, Rufina, and Mario, is that the renovation of the Balibo Cafeteria & Craft-Shop, are now completed. The Cafeteria was renovated on the back of the new Community Kitchen built by BHT and Rotary, with help from Advantage Kitchens P/L, the large catering-supplier company, based here in Melbourne.

The renovated Cafe Opened June

Michele reports that the cafeteria has become the must-go place for all tourists and provides meals for the volunteer Dentists teams coming to give their time and skill at our Dental Clinic. The kitchen is also at the very heart of the local community, catering for the largest community and religious festivities. The effect of all this is that it also contributes to local employment and opportunities for micro-enterprise income for locals bringing food and craft for sale or consumption at the cafeteria.

Thank you to all contributors to the new Cafeteria and all above works; the CLC Management Team, Balibo House Trust and the Rotary Clubs of Port Melbourne, Keilor, Pakenham, Berwick, Windsor [NSW] Mitchell River and Koo Wee Rup, our latest addition to the Balibo Partnership.

Wow – what a difference to the lean to which looked as if it would fall down with the slightest puff of wind. Looks amazing and a really needed addition for the Balibo community and passing trade.
