A Penny for Your ThoughtsPosted by leo in Avenues of Service, Club Service, Community Service, DistrictWell look who came to dinner
and took us for a Ride
Phil and Susan McDonald joined us for a pleasant evening and a talk about Penny Farthings. We learned many little known facts and what can only be termed idiosyncrasies of the Penny Farthing bicycle and how it was the forerunner of the safety bicycle that we use today. As Phil demonstrated (see pics) this is not a relic or museum piece but an elegant piece of machinery to be admired and still in use today.
Phil regaled us with its present day use, he once pedalled all the way around Australia, and he has set records between Adelaide and Melbourne and Melbourne to Sydney that had every one puffed out and in awe as he described the various breakages he has sustained by not being able to reach the pedals or from being catapaulted over the handle bars. But most important Phil invited us to join with him and his wife Susan (baker of Muffins fame) in organising a bike ride in commemoration of Rotary cyclist Sam Lamendola a great supporter now deceased. Sam’s Rotary Ride will take polace on Sunday the 24th of October at the You Yangs Regional Park with with morning and afternoon tea and lunch provided. There will be rides available for all levels of ability from the 45k bitumen loop, a smaller 5k bitumen route and a 14k gravel ride to suit all styles and all comers. Watch this site for more details and how to sign up. The itinerary and entry form will be available shortly.

Look Who came to DinnerPosted by leo in Avenues of Service, Community Service, International ServiceTh Rotary Club of Port Melbourne hosted a Dinner for the Free the Bears Inc charity and was pleased to welcome the Victorian members of Free the Bears and Founder Mary to the Dinner. The guests were entertained with fantastic FTB presentations that told the story of the work that effects whole communities , the success of the Indian program to date and a number of raffles and prizes and gifts were distributed. A Great Night for All who participated! Press the logo for the Pics Tom Burns provided us with a great talk about growing up in Port Melbourne and the suburb of yesteryear. But even as Tom described the changes and gentrification that have overcome this working class suburb he also informed us of the great and not so great things that have changed its face. He gave us great insight on the working poor, the diocese amalgamation of this once very catholic borough, the wide and varied face of the new residents and the people that have been left behind or have for one reason or another become reliant on the mission services that Tom runs at the Parish hall. Tom told us of the families that now access the mission for food and small meals and BBQ provided from church funds and donations. He would be pleased of any donations of food (hard goods) or money that assist in supporting this community service. He would be very pleased if anyone who has a couple of hours to spare could consider helping with the preparation or just washing up. Rotary Visitors, President of RC Southbank Phillip Archer along with Christine Richardson past president of RC Essendon North Joined us for Tom’s inetersting talk. In fact Phillip Archer has now organised a large food drive to assist the Christmas Hamper for the Christmas party on 22nd of December by the RC Southbank . RCPM members would be very welcome to donate, help, sort and pack hampers ready for the recipients on this day. Contact Geri. |
